What does Another 13 smell like?

Bottle of Another 13 by Le Labo
The originalAnother 13Le Labo

Another 13 by Le Labo was composed by Nathalie Lorson, launched in 2010 and is sold as unisex. The house's own page calls its key material ambroxyde; the catalogue lists it as Ambroxan. The opening is a light touch of pear and apple. The heart sets Ambroxan beside moss and jasmine, and the base is musk with ambrette, the seed that gives a soft, skin-like warmth.

Its accords run musky, clean, fresh, powdery, woody and a little animal.

Why so many perfumes resemble it

The materials at the centre of Another 13 are shared widely. Several perfumes build on its pairing of Ambroxan and musk, which is why searches for an alternative turn up so many names, and why votes on the comparison pages below are rarely unanimous.

For the background, our guide to ambergris vs Ambroxan explains the base material, and white musk perfume covers the musks that sit on top. One of the authentic alternatives further down, Molecule 02, is that base material on its own.

Best overall: Simply Another

Bottle of Simply Another by ALT. Fragrances
Simply AnotherALT. FragrancesBest overall

Simply Another by ALT. Fragrances leads on one detailed account. A Fragrantica member who sprayed Another 13 and several clones next to one another on her arm, writing on the Another 13 Shades page, found Simply Another and the original very hard to tell apart. In a Fragrantica forum thread on Another 13 dupes, another member says she is very happy with it.

The main difference is in the published list. ALT's own page says it is inspired by Another 13 and names ambroxan, musk, jasmine and moss: the heart and base of the original, with the pear, apple and ambrette not named.

It suits someone who wants the musky core of Another 13 in a full bottle and cares less about the fruit at the very start. Basis: a named source, one member's arm comparison and a forum recommendation, plus ALT's note list.

Closest on the dry-down: Parallel

Bottle of Parallel by Oakcha
ParallelOakchaClosest on the dry-down

Parallel by Oakcha divides opinion, so read both sides. On its Fragrantica page, two members who wore it next to Another 13 find it very close; one of the pair notices only a slight difference up close.

What changes is a matter of dispute. Other members on the same page disagree: some find it sharper, some soapier, and some do not find it close at all. Parfumo's comparison settles in the middle and rates the pair moderately similar.

It suits someone willing to accept a split verdict for the chance of a near match, ideally with a 3ml of the original to check it against. Basis: a named source, two members who wore both, with dissenting comments and Parfumo's moderate verdict.

Sweeter take: Other 13

Bottle of Other 13 by Alexandria Fragrances
Other 13Alexandria FragrancesSweeter take

Other 13 by Alexandria Fragrances has a small but one-sided vote behind it: on the pair's comparison page, 16 of 19 voting members find the two similar.

Where it moves is the character. Parfumo members classify Other 13 as synthetic, sweet, woody, fresh and creamy, and the original as synthetic, fresh, woody, spicy and fruity. Going by those labels, the fruit and spice give way to sweetness and a creamier feel.

It suits someone who finds Another 13 a touch cool or sharp and would like the same airy musk with a softer, sweeter edge. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's pair vote and classifications.

Darker take: Le Temps Perdu

Bottle of Le Temps Perdu by Salle Privée
Le Temps PerduSalle PrivéeDarker take

Le Temps Perdu by Salle Privée is a niche perfume in its own right, not a clone. On its comparison page, nine in ten voting members rate the two similar.

The change is weight. Parfumo members classify it woody, synthetic, spicy, animal and powdery, while the original leads with synthetic and fresh. On those labels it is the warmer, more animal of the two, with the freshness pushed back.

It suits someone who already wears Another 13 and wants a deeper, woodier version for evenings. Its bottle is the dearest of the three we could price. Basis: a named source, its Parfumo vote and classifications.

Premium alternative: Arizona Bloom

Bottle of Arizona Bloom by Floral Street
Arizona BloomFloral StreetPremium alternative

Arizona Bloom by Floral Street is another perfume with its own identity. In a Fragrantica forum thread on Another 13 alternatives, a member says it smells very close to Another 13 and costs much less. On the Arizona Bloom comparison page, more than two in three voting members agree that the two are similar.

The main difference is that nobody on record spells out what changes: the forum remark is short, and the vote leaves about a third unconvinced. Its 50ml bottle is smaller than the other priced picks.

It suits someone who wants a separate perfume with some backing as an Another 13 alternative, and who will try it before trusting one remark. Basis: a named source, one forum member and Parfumo's vote.

Lowest price: Not a Perfume

Bottle of Not a Perfume by Juliette Has a Gun
Not a PerfumeJuliette Has a GunLowest price

Not a Perfume by Juliette Has a Gun undercuts the other two priced picks, per bottle and per ml. Fragrantica lists it as a 2010 scent built on a single material, Cetalox, an Ambroxan-type molecule that Fragrantica also lists in Another 13's base.

The main difference is that one shared material is not the same as a match. On its comparison page, the pair splits Parfumo's voters, with just over half calling it similar.

It suits someone who wants the Ambroxan-and-skin idea at the smallest outlay and is fine with a loose resemblance. Basis: a named source, Fragrantica's note listing and a split Parfumo vote.

Where the picks part ways with Another 13

The arguments about these picks keep coming back to the same three points. Some read sharper or soapier than the original, which is the complaint against Parallel. Others swap the fruit for sweetness, as Other 13's profile suggests. And some share the Ambroxan-type base without much else in common, which is the honest reading of Not a Perfume's split vote.

What none of the sources picks out is the pear and apple opening. ALT leaves them off Simply Another's list entirely, so if that fruit is what you like in Another 13, wear the original before deciding.

Clone bottle or an Another 13 decant?

The table prices three of the six. Simply Another, Parallel and Other 13 show "No EU list price found", since no euro list price turned up for any of the three. Not a Perfume is the lowest per ml of those priced, and Le Temps Perdu and Arizona Bloom each cost several times as much per ml.

10ML sells Another 13 in two sizes. The 3ml holds around 60 sprays for €16.47 (€5.49/ml); the 10ml decant holds around 200 for €49.41, or €4.94/ml. A week with the 3ml tells you more than any description: whether you notice it on yourself at all, and whether you want more of the musk or more of the fruit. Our per-ml price index and the guide on decants against full bottles cover the wider maths.

Originals that share the musk and Ambroxan

We stock four perfumes from other houses that draw on the same materials. Molecule 02 by Escentric Molecules is Ambroxan alone, the base material in isolation; it is listed here as a material, not a match. Parisian Musc by Matiere Premiere puts Virginia cedar over ambrette, then ambrettolide, Ambroxan and musk, a woodier skin musk. Lazy Sunday Morning by Maison Margiela shares the pear and ambrette, with aldehydes, lily-of-the-valley, iris, orange blossom, rose, patchouli and white musk for a cleaner, laundered feel. Fleur de Peau by Diptyque pairs musk and ambrette with ambergris and sandalwood under aldehydes, pink pepper, bergamot, angelica, iris and Turkish rose, a more floral take on paper.

Each comes as a decant, so two of them can share a week with Another 13. For more from the house, our other Le Labo dupes guide covers a woody scent from the house, and the Gypsy Water dupes guide covers another niche perfume. For a wider list, try clean perfumes.

How to test an Another 13 dupe

Spray Another 13 on the inside of one wrist one day and the dupe the next, and ask someone near you as well. Check the first minutes for the pear and apple, then, once it has settled, whether it still reads as warm skin or has turned sharp or soapy, the two complaints raised against Parallel.

The 3ml is the size made for that week of comparison. If the original wins, the 10ml decant gives you around 200 sprays to keep wearing it. To learn how a decant is filled, see what a perfume decant is, and for why trying first saves money, the blind-buy guide.

Clone or original? What to know first

Can I try Another 13 in a small size before I pick a clone?
Yes. 10ML decants Another 13 from the original bottle in two sizes, 3ml and 10ml. The 3ml costs €16.47 and holds around 60 sprays, so a clone and the original can share a week.
Which Le Labo Another 13 dupe comes first in this guide?
Simply Another by ALT. Fragrances. One Fragrantica member who wore the original and several clones next to each other on her arm found it very hard to tell apart from Another 13, and a forum member says she is very happy with it.
Is Oakcha Parallel close to Another 13?
Opinion is split. Two Fragrantica members who wore both find it very close, while others find it sharper, soapier or not close at all, and Parfumo rates the pair moderately similar.
Does Molecule 02 smell like Another 13?
Molecule 02 is Ambroxan on its own, and Ambroxan sits at the heart of Another 13, so they share a material rather than a whole scent. Another 13 adds pear, apple, moss, jasmine, musk and ambrette around it.
How do the clone bottles compare per ml with an Another 13 decant?
Not a Perfume is the lowest per ml of the three priced picks, and three picks had no EU price we could check. Another 13 itself costs €49.41 for a 10ml decant, or €4.94/ml.
How long will Another 13 stay noticeable on me?
Staying power varies with skin and climate, so spend several days with a 3ml and ask someone close by whether they still notice it.
