Six Layton dupes set against the original on notes, owner reports and price, and where each one drifts. Or wear Layton itself first as a 3ml decant.

In this guide

Quick answer

The best Layton dupe overall is Détour Noir by Al Haramain: a large majority of voters on Parfumo's comparison page find it similar, and it shares Layton's apple, lavender and vanilla. Royal Bleu by Orientica is closest on the dry-down for one owner who wore both, and Azure Velvet by Khadlaj is the lowest-priced bottle. Want the real thing? Layton is €31.50 for a 10ml decant at 10ML.

What does Layton smell like?

Bottle of Layton by Parfums de Marly
The originalLaytonParfums de Marly

Layton by Parfums de Marly came out in 2016 as a men's perfume. It starts on apple, lavender, bergamot and mandarin orange, a fruity, herbal opening. Geranium, violet and jasmine follow as a floral middle. The base carries the weight: vanilla and cardamom with sandalwood, pepper, guaiac wood and patchouli.

Its listed accords run from warm spicy and fresh spicy to woody, vanilla and powdery. That pull between a fresh, fruity top and a spiced vanilla base is what every clone below is chasing, and it is where most of them give a little ground in one direction or the other.

Layton or Layton Exclusif?

The name causes confusion. Layton Exclusif, launched in 2017, is not a stronger Layton but a different, oud-led perfume: almond, mandarin orange and bergamot on top, civet, rose and gardenia in the heart, and Laotian oud, coffee, guaiac wood, vanilla and oakmoss in the base. Every clone in this guide is aimed at the 2016 Layton, so check which one a listing means before you buy. 10ML sells both, and a 3ml of the Exclusif is €9.72.

Best overall: Détour Noir

Bottle of Détour Noir by Al Haramain
Détour NoirAl HaramainBest overall

Détour Noir by Al Haramain has the broadest backing of any clone here. Parfumo's comparison page for the pair draws the biggest vote of the six, and a large majority of the members who answered find the two similar. The same page lists apple, lavender, bergamot, jasmine, violet, geranium, vanilla, patchouli and guaiac wood in both, which covers most of Layton's pyramid.

The main difference is texture. A Parfumo member who owns both finds them really very similar, but picks out an apple that comes across a little more synthetic and harsher, and a dry-down that is less sweet and fresher. Another member, who compared it with a Layton sample, finds the opening less smooth but the dry-downs very hard to tell apart.

It suits someone who cares most about where Layton settles, can live with a rougher start, and wants a large bottle to spray without counting. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison page and write-ups by members who know the original.

Why this pick?Sources: 3

Basis: Named source

  3. Another Parfumo member, who compared it with a Layton sample, finds the opening less smooth and well blended than Layton's but the dry-downs very hard to tell apart. Détour Noir, member write-up 'PDM Layton on a Budget' (Parfumo)

Closest on the dry-down: Royal Bleu

Bottle of Royal Bleu by Orientica
Royal BleuOrienticaClosest on the dry-down

Royal Bleu by Orientica holds this slot because of one detailed account. A Parfumo member who owns Layton and wore both on skin finds them very similar, and puts the difference in the opening rather than the dry-down. By that account, the two meet as they settle.

The main difference is the start. Another member finds Royal Bleu harsher right after spraying, strikingly similar after 15 to 20 minutes, and Layton only slightly sweeter. On the comparison page, most members who voted find the pair similar.

It suits someone who cares most about how Layton smells once its top notes have gone, and who can accept a different first impression. Basis: a named source, two members' write-ups on Parfumo and the comparison page.

Fresher take: Azure Velvet

Bottle of Azure Velvet by Khadlaj
Azure VelvetKhadlajFresher take

Azure Velvet by Khadlaj moves away from Layton's warmth instead of adding to it. A member writing on Parfumo finds it resembles Layton after the first moments, but fresher and more citrusy.

The main difference is temperature: another member notes a distinctly fresher, minty touch where Layton feels warmer and sweeter. The Parfumo comparison shows most voting members finding the pair similar, from a smaller pool than Détour Noir's.

It suits someone who finds Layton's sweetness a step too far and wants the same outline with more citrus and a cooler edge. Basis: a named source, member write-ups and the comparison page on Parfumo.

Softer take: Dusk

Bottle of Dusk by The Woods Collection
DuskThe Woods CollectionSofter take

Dusk by The Woods Collection is, to one Parfumo member, an extremely nice rendition of Layton with the mentholated opening toned down and more cardamom warmth in its place. Another finds it softer and lightly buttery next to Détour Noir.

The main difference is the edge. Layton opens on apple, lavender and bergamot; by those accounts, Dusk rounds that start off and leans on cardamom and a buttery softness instead. Its comparison page has the second-largest vote in this guide, and most members who answered find the two similar.

It suits someone who loves where Layton ends up but finds its opening too sharp. Basis: a named source, members' comments and its comparison page on Parfumo.

Darker take: Royal Paragon

Bottle of Royal Paragon by Zimaya
Royal ParagonZimayaDarker take

Royal Paragon by Zimaya takes the idea somewhere deeper. A Parfumo member calls it another well-made Layton alternative, with a more intense woody side, more cardamom and a little less sweetness, and finds it projects a little less and wears more masculine.

The main difference is the top, at least on paper. Parfumo's comparison page lists bitter almond and bergamot, then guaiac wood and rose, then coffee, oakmoss, amber and patchouli: no apple and no lavender. That list puts it nearer Layton Exclusif than the 2016 Layton, since almond, coffee, guaiac wood, rose, patchouli and oakmoss all sit on the Exclusif's list too, though Fragrantica's listing follows Layton's apple-and-lavender pyramid instead. Most members who voted on that comparison page still find it similar to Layton.

It suits someone who likes Layton's woods but wants a less fruity opening of bitter almond and bergamot. Basis: a named source, one member's write-up on Parfumo and its comparison page.

Why this pick?Sources: 2

  2. Parfumo's comparison page shows 46 of 55 voting members finding Royal Paragon similar to Layton, and lists bitter almond and bergamot, guaiac wood and rose, and coffee, oakmoss, amber and patchouli for Royal Paragon. Royal Paragon vs Layton (Parfumo comparison)

Premium alternative: Royal Chariot Attar

Bottle of Royal Chariot Attar by The Dua Brand
Royal Chariot AttarThe Dua BrandPremium alternative

Royal Chariot Attar by The Dua Brand earns the premium label for its format, not its price. It is an attar, a perfume oil, from the house's Inspired Expression collection, and a Parfumo member who wore it against Layton finds it riper and much stronger, with a subtle menthol note.

The main difference is that format: an oil you apply to skin rather than a spray. The comparison page lists apple, lavender, bergamot, geranium, jasmine, violet, vanilla, guaiac wood and patchouli in both, the same shared notes it gives Détour Noir, files it in that collection, and shows most members who voted finding the pair similar.

It suits someone who already prefers perfume oils and wants the Layton outline in that form. Basis: a named source, a member's comparison write-up and the comparison page on Parfumo.

Where the clones part ways with Layton

Read the reports together and two patterns show. First, the opening: Royal Bleu's owner places the gap there and another member finds it harsher at first, Azure Velvet only comes close after the first moments, and one Détour Noir member finds its opening less smooth than Layton's.

Second, the sweetness. A Détour Noir owner finds its dry-down less sweet and fresher, a Royal Bleu member finds Layton slightly sweeter, and Azure Velvet swaps warmth for citrus and mint. Dusk goes the other way, with more cardamom warmth by one member's account. Layton's base holds vanilla in check with cardamom and pepper, and the clones mostly decide which side of that balance to favour.

Clone bottle or a Layton decant?

Counted per ml, the priced clones are far below the original. Détour Noir and Azure Velvet come in 100ml bottles, and Royal Bleu in an 80ml bottle at a higher price, still far below a Layton decant per ml. Dusk, Royal Paragon and Royal Chariot Attar show no price in the table, because no EU listing had them in stock on the check date. A 10ml decant of Layton is €31.50 (€3.15/ml), and a 30ml, around 600 sprays, is €79.38, or €2.65/ml.

Counted per decision, it looks different. A 3ml of Layton, around 60 sprays, is €10.98, less than any clone bottle we could price. A week with it tells you whether the apple-and-vanilla balance is what you want before you spend on a 100ml of something else. If the Exclusif tempts you too, a 10ml decant of it is €26.19. The price per ml index and the decant or full bottle comparison lay out the numbers across the catalogue.

Authentic perfumes with the same warm spice

Three originals from other houses share a good part of Layton's base. Kajal Homme by Kajal shares the most on paper: mandarin orange and cassis over cardamom and guaiac wood, then tonka bean, vanilla, sandalwood and patchouli, with orange blossom and cashmeran softening the middle. Ani by Nishane shares bergamot, cardamom, vanilla, sandalwood and patchouli, and adds ginger, pink pepper, black currant and Turkish rose for a rounder, more ambery feel. Noir Extreme by Tom Ford opens on cardamom, nutmeg and mandarin orange, passes through kulfi, rose and orange blossom, and settles on vanilla, amber and sandalwood, the sweetest of the three.

Each comes as a decant, so one of them can sit next to Layton in the same week. For more in this register, browse our men's perfume edit.

How to test a Layton dupe

Most of the disagreement about Layton clones concerns the opening, so do not decide in the first minutes. Wear Layton on one day and the clone on the next, on skin rather than a strip, and check three things: whether the apple and lavender start feels as bright, whether the violet and geranium middle is there at all, and whether the base keeps its cardamom and pepper or slides into plain vanilla. Smell again late in the day, once it has settled, since that is where Royal Bleu's owner found the two converge.

A 3ml covers that comparison with room to spare, and a 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, gives you weeks of wear if the original wins. New to the format? Our explainer on perfume decants and the blind-buy guide cover the basics. For the rest of the house, see the best Parfums de Marly perfumes, and the Delina dupes and Valaya dupes guides.

Clone or original? What to know first

Can I try Layton in a 3ml before I settle on a clone?
Yes. 10ML fills Layton from the original bottle in 3ml, 10ml and 30ml sizes. The 3ml is around 60 sprays for €10.98, enough for a week of Layton beside whichever clone you are weighing up.
Why does Détour Noir come first among the Layton dupes here?
It has the broadest backing: its Parfumo comparison page draws the largest vote of the six, a large majority of those members find it similar to Layton, and both lists share apple, lavender, bergamot, violet, vanilla and guaiac wood. One member there finds it a little fruitier and more vanilla-led, with less spice.
How near does Royal Bleu get to Layton?
Near enough at the end, by one owner's account. A Parfumo member who owns Layton and wore both on skin finds them very similar, with the difference in the opening rather than the dry-down. Another owner finds Royal Bleu less spicy, with more apple and vanilla.
Is Layton Exclusif just a stronger Layton?
No. Layton Exclusif is a different, oud-led perfume with almond, civet, rose, Laotian oud and coffee in its list, not a richer version of the 2016 Layton. The clones in this guide aim at Layton itself, and 10ML sells both, so you can wear each as a 3ml before choosing.
Is there a Parfums de Marly Layton alternative that is not a clone?
Yes: Kajal Homme, Ani by Nishane and Noir Extreme by Tom Ford are original perfumes that share Layton's cardamom, vanilla and sandalwood. Kajal Homme shares the most of its notes on paper, and Noir Extreme is the sweetest of the three.
Per ml, is a clone bottle better value than a Layton decant?
Per ml, yes: Détour Noir, Royal Bleu and Azure Velvet all work out far lower per ml than a Layton decant. Per decision, a 3ml of Layton at €10.98 costs less than any priced clone bottle, and a 10ml decant is €31.50 if you want weeks of wear.
How long does Layton stay on skin?
That depends on your skin and the weather more than on the bottle, so no single answer holds for everyone. The fairest way to find out is to wear a 3ml for a few days and notice when you stop smelling it.
